DGVFM 75 Year Anniversary Symposium

The German Society for Actuarial and Financial Mathematics (DGVFM) celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2023. A highlight in the anniversary year of the scientifically oriented and non-profit sister association of the German Actuarial Association e.V. (DAV) was the top-class scientific symposium. The DGVFM hosted the symposium at KölnSKY on Thursday June 22, 2023, followed by a reception above the rooftops of Cologne. „For our 75th birthday, which we are celebrating this year, we not only want to celebrate our association, but above all to focus on the things that interest and concern us,“ explained Prof. Dr. Ralf Korn, Chairman of the Board of the DGVFM, highlighting, „We not only looked at the past of the DGVFM, but especially emphasized the scientific and social significance of our topics for the future.“

Alongside insightful presentations by high-class speakers such as Prof. Dr Julia Eisenberg (Vienna University of Technology), Prof. Dr Rüdiger Kiesel (University of Duisburg-Essen), and Prof. Dr Mario Wüthrich (ETH Zurich), the GAUSS main prize of 3,000 euros was awarded for outstanding scientific work in the field of actuarial and financial mathematics to Gabriela Zeller and Prof. Dr Matthias Scherer. In addition, the event featured past chairmen and current board members of the DGVFM talking about the association’s milestones and its vision for the future.

The conference magazine „DAV-KOMPASS“, published for the symposium, is dedicated to risk, data and financial literacy in society, education, and business. Among the authors were Prof. Dr Horst Müller-Peters from the TH Köln as well as Prof. Dr Carmela Aprea and Prof. Dr Tabea Bucher-Koenen, co-directors of the Mannheim Institute for Financial Education. For the rest of the year, a new video of the DGVFM anniversary video series will continue to be released in the middle of each month, discussing actuarial topics from the perspective of science and practice and focusing on the link between the two. The videos are available on the actuview platform. „In this way, we want to specifically address the public as well as interested mathematicians,“ says Prof. Korn.
