The Society of Actuaries (SOA) is currently running three Calls for Papers on topics related to Climate Change:
- The Impact of Climate Change Risk on Retirement: The SOA Research Institute’s Aging and Retirement, and Catastrophe and Climate Strategic Research Programs, (“sponsors”) have partnered on this research effort to explore this topic from the perspectives of a variety of retirement system stakeholders. The result of this effort is intended to provide a useful resource for readers to become well-grounded on the issues surrounding the impact of climate risk on retirement and set the stage for future research.
Submissions Due: June 23, 2023
- Sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals: In 2015, the United Nations adopted its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Included are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which can be found here THE 17 GOALS | Sustainable Development, along with 169 targets. The goals relate to a wide range of issues, including quality of life, education, environment, and economics, among others. Included are goals related to climate action. The SOA Research Institute Catastrophe & Climate Strategic Research Program would like to better understand how concepts of sustainable development and sustainability can drive changes to actuarial practice or be addressed by actuarial practice areas.

- Current and Potential Uses for the Actuaries Climate Index: In 2017, the North American actuarial organizations (SOA, Casualty Actuarial Society, American Academy of Actuaries, and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries) developed the Actuaries Climate Index (covering Canada and the United States). It has been produced every quarter since then. Beginning in 2020, the Australian Institute of Actuaries began publishing a similar index for Australia. Indices are also under development in other areas. The Society of Actuaries Research Institute Catastrophe & Climate Strategic Research Program Steering Committee would like to better understand how the Actuaries Climate Index is being used, or could potentially be used, as well as thoughts respondents may have on enhancements to the Index.
